A National Disability Employment Awareness Month Story
Michael McMurray has found a fulfilling role working at a fast-food chain three days a week. As the dedicated dishwasher, Michael describes his job simply: "I clean the dirty dishes, put the clean dishes away, and help my friends."
Starting a year and a half ago, Michael’s journey in this position has been supported by his Achieva employment specialists. Through their guidance, Michael has continued to grow and thrive, showing his hard work and dedication daily.
What Michael loves most about his job are the friendships he has made, the positive environment, and the added bonus of a free lunch during every shift. There isn’t a single thing he dislikes about his role, and his parents, who were initially unsure about Michael working in the community, now couldn’t be prouder. After searching for his "forever job," Michael has truly found a home with his team, and they’ve welcomed him as one of their own.
Outside of work, Michael stays active in the Special Olympics, swimming and bowling, participates in a weekly drama class, and enjoys going out to eat. Describing himself as friendly, hardworking, and helpful, Michael is a shining example of perseverance and positivity.
Michael’s message to everyone is simple yet powerful: "Don’t give up and follow your dreams. Always work hard."
